Fashion Gxd Magazine : Lets Talk About Success Keva What is your favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur?

Keva Sharp : Being able to run your business the way YOU want to. When you have the freedom to run your own business, you are able to try new things and take more risks.

FGM: what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?

KS: Actually muscling up the courage to start my own business. Starting a new venture on your own could be scary, and that might be the reason why a lot of people may not start their own business. Yet, once you get the courage to take that leap, you have already on the road to becoming successful

FGM: What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?

KS: Listening Skills: You have to be a good listener. Your clients, customers, current and past successful entrepreneurs, the public; learn to listen to their stories, views, and opinions. These are the people that help your business grow into what you want it to become. It's easy to HEAR someone speaking but the question is are you actually LISTENING?

-Self Motivation Skills: I personally think that being able to motivate yourself, is a skill. Some people are not motivated by themselves.  You have to be self motivated to become a successful entrepreneur. Find something within yourself that will motivate you to become that top person you want to become and that will drive your business to its peak.

-Money Management Skills: It takes money to make money. When I first started Nasty Nails I wanted to do everything the way I envisioned it in my head

- BIG. However, once I started adding up the cost of everything I realized everything I wanted to do was a little bit out of my budget. So I scaled my vision down a bit and started small. I slowly built my way up. I did something almost like a test run. You have to know how much money you have to spend and how much money you will profit when it comes to owning a business. You don't want to be "here today and gone tomorrow".

FGM: What have been some of your failures, and what have you learned from them?

KS: One of my failures was not networking enough. I could be at a nail salon or shopping in a clothing store and see some girls who I know would like my product and I wouldn't even approach them to hand out my business cards. Now I hand out my business cards and promote my Instagram every chance I get.

FGM: What ignited the spark in you to start a entrepreneur venture or to pursue your career?

KS: I am an Account Manager at a business management firm called MR Financial. I handle the financial, day to day, and business affairs of professional athletes. We are a small firm so I do assist my boss Mark Riley in running the firm. Over the years I became intrigued with how an actual business operated. I've learned so much working at MR Financial that I wanted to put my knowledge to the test and start my own business. Plus I also feel that everyone should have something to call their own.

FGM: Do you believe there is some sort of pattern or formula to becoming a successful entrepreneur?

PS: Everyone operates different so no I don't think their is a formula or pattern when it comes to being a successful entrepreneur. As long as whatever it is you're doing (legally haha) to become successful works for you, then that is your formula.

  • FGM:What has been the most satisfying moment in business?

  • KS:The most satisfying moment is when my customers contact me to let me know how pleased they are with the product. I really enjoy the fact that they are happy

FGM: This is the Inspiration Segment , So , If you could talk to one person from history, who would it be and why?

KS: Hm- I would have to say that person would be Annie Malone. Now I am sure you have heard of Madam C.J. Walker but Annie Malone was HER inspiration. Annie was the master of black hair and beauty. She was an inventor and entrepreneur. You really don't hear much about Annie but in the early 1900's she was one of the first African American millionaires. She was the founder and owner of Poro College, the first educational institution that focused on the teaching of black cosmetology. Being a woman and Black back then was hard enough, so for Annie to have two strikes against her and still rise to be as successful as she was, that is indeed an accomplishment.

FGM: Who has been your greatest inspiration?

S: My greatest inspiration has been my mother. I look up to my mother because she is a true business woman. She has had  successful social work practice for over 15 years and her along with my dad have also owned a multicultural children's book business.Even though we may not always see eye to eye on certain business proposals and ideas, I never not listen to what she says or her advice. I always incorporate some how.

FGM: What book has inspired you the most? (OR What is your favorite book?)

S: My favorite book is "Eat Pray Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert

FGM: What motivates you?

KS: To be honest, my friends motivate. Every person I have grown up with and became friends with over the years is successful. I have six friends that are entrepreneurs themselves. They are the ones who motivate me.

FGM: What is your greatest fear, and how do you manage fear?

KS: This may sound typical but failure is my fear. I manage my fear of failure by speaking nothing but positive things into the universe.

FGM: How do you define success?

KS: Success to me is more than making money, gaining power, and earning respect. It's about balancing out your personal life and your work life. It's about being satisfied with the fact that you put your all into being the best that you could be and actually being happy with it. Most of all, to me success is about doing what you LOVE. Once you are doing what you love as work, you have become successful.

FGM: What is the best way to achieve long-term success?

KS: Pace yourself. Grow your business over the years. Grow it to something big and great. Don't have your business be the equivalent of a "one hit wonder" song.

FGM: If you could have given yourself a piece of knowledge or advice when you started what would that be?

S: When I first started the piece of advice I would have given myself would have been to ask my fellow successful friends for help. Whether it was for a contact or whether it was to tag along with them to a networking event to make more connections, I should have asked for help instead of being so prideful.

GM: Which opportunities should you have followed; what pitfalls would you have avoided?.

KS: As far as opportunities, I should have went to more networking events. As far as pitfalls I could have avoided, it would be I could have focused on more than one area of my business. In the beginning I was so focused on the social networking aspect of marketing that I did not focus on other marketing avenues such as t-shirts and walking into the nail salons and talking about my product.

FGM: What is a Inspiring Woman To You ?

KS: An inspiring woman to me is one that came keep it together in front of their clients, workers and customers. Just because you are having the worst day of your life on the inside does not mean you bring it to your place of business. Just as my Dad always said "Never let them see you sweat".

FGM:What are your hobbies? What do you do in your non-work time?

KS: Non-work time? HA! I'm never not working. I actually enjoy my work whether it's working with my athletes or on Nasty Nails. Yet when I do have some down time I do enjoy going out to eat at new restaurants I also enjoy traveling. As far as hobbies. I enjoy writing and researching. I constantly research a variety of topics or issues I am interested in.
